Clinical Counselling

Choosing a Counsellor and Therapist

It can be confusing to choose the right counsellor as many of the designations sound the same, but they are actually quite different in terms of their educational requirements and qualification criteria.

Jill is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and is trained in a number of different counselling and therapy techniques. A Registered Clinical Counsellor is regulated by the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, the provincial body for the Canadian Association of Clinical Counsellors. As criteria for membership, Registered Clinical Counsellors must meet rigorous academic requirements at the Masters level, along with clinical experience and supervision requirements.

Jill is also a Certified Hypnotherapist, and is able to provide clients with a unique combination of counselling and hypnotherapy techniques to best meet their needs.

What is Clinical Counselling?

According to the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, “Clinical Counselling is the use of clinical mental health counselling values, principles and methods for the purpose of assisting clients to understand their issues and concerns in order to enhance self-growth, personal effectiveness, interpersonal relations, life adjustments, spiritual growth, and mental health. This may involve developing insight into, and/or learning to prevent and/or eliminate maladaptive behaviour or symptoms, in addition to the enhancement and strengthening of healthy coping styles and functional relationships with self and others.”

Counselling and Therapy Techniques

Because every client and situation is unique, Jill assesses each client individually, and creates a program that may include one or more therapy techniques to best meet individual needs and resolve issues as quickly as possible.

These therapies include:

Family Systems Theory

Family Systems counselling recognizes that couples, families and their individual members function as an entwined emotional group that influence and are influenced by each another’s behaviours and choices. Looking at how the emotional system works in the family that shaped you, Jill will help you to recognize the ingrained techniques you automatically use to deal with stress, and then reveal effective options for solving problems that have the best long-term outcome for you, your partner and your family.

Adlerian Psychology

Adlerian psychology promotes equality, balance in life, the thought that every individual is creative, unique, and more than the sum of their parts. Adlerians view the individual as a whole in context with their environment, family, friendships and intimate relationships. This practice helps individuals, children, parents, and couples achieve more harmonious relationships by examining behaviours, discovering positive aspects of each other, and harnessing the power in knowing we can make positive choices and changes in relationships if we so desire.

In addition to being a Registered Clinical Counsellor, Jill is a Certified Hypnotherapist and is able to integrate hypnotherapy into your counselling program where appropriate.

Additional therapies Jill integrates into her practice are: Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Autogenic Training, Progressive Neuromuscular Relaxation, Satir Transformational Therapy and Traumatic Incident Reduction.
